Austria – Aircraft on Stamps – Part VII
Hello again, Saturday evening here. Just finished adding a few stamps to the online store. Nothing spectacular but just getting cleared up a bit I hope. An eclectic mix from Ethiopia including some Airs, through India Cochin and Travancore to New Zealand Officials.
So to Austria and todays stamp, this showing Salzburg airport, on a stamp issued in 2001.
This stamp has it all; an interesting design showing the old terminal - the city airport it would seem from the sign - and a Fieseler Fi-156 Storch. A what you ask? Well this was a pretty remarkable little aircraft.
It was nicknamed the stork (storch in German) and originally built by Fieseler before and during WWII
In total nearly 3000 of all variants were built right up until the 1950s It was notable for its excellent short field performance and low stalling speed, actually I think that should be scary stalling speed as it was at 50 km/h.
One added piece of trivia: the wings on the Storch could be folded back along the fuselage and the aircraft could be carried easily on a trailer of sorts. There is plenty of really interesting material to read about this aircraft and its involvement in WWII.
I hope you are having a good weekend.
